1979 verstarb einer der Hauptakteure der »barocken Revolution« und der gewiss berühmteste Countertenor des 20. Jahrhunderts: Alfred Deller. Durch seine unvergleichliche Kunst verstand er es, den Eindruck zu vermitteln, Purcell hätte drei Jahrhunderte zuvor seine Songs eigens für ihn geschrieben. Das Publikum der Sechziger- und Siebzigerjahre kam dank Deller in den Genuss nicht nur eines schlicht unnachahmlichen Klangs, sondern auch musikalischer Köstlichkeiten eines Repertoires, das bis dahin in den Bibliotheken geschlummert hatte. Die sorgfältige technische Bearbeitung der Originalbänder durch harmonia mundi lässt 40 Jahre nach Dellers Tod seine Kunst lebendiger denn je erscheinen.
