Fassung der Uraufführung
Das Dorset Garden Theatre war eine der Londoner Spielstätten, in denen die typisch englische Form der Semiopera sehr erfolgreich, weil besonders prachtvoll und aufwändig gepflegt wurde. Purcells Zusammenarbeit mit diesem Theater begann 1690 und endete mit seinem allzu frühen Tod 1695. Bis dahin entstanden geradezu mustergültige Beispiele dieser Gattung, von denen The Fairy Queen (nach Shakespeares A Midsummer Night’s Dream) sicherlich eines der schönsten Werke ist. Der englische Dirigent Paul McCreesh und sein Gabrieli Consort & Players legen hier auf SIGNUM CLASSICS eine erstklassige Aufnahme von Purcells Meisterwerk vor, die sich streng an die Uraufführungsfassung von 1692 hält.
