Diese Produktion entstand im Februar 1957 in den West Hampstead Studios der Decca; es war die erste Gesamtaufnahme der »Fairy Queen«. Denn lange war Purcell nur im literarischen Kontext wahrgenommen worden; seine Qualitäten als Dramatiker waren der musikalischen Öffentlichkeit überhaupt nicht bewusst. Es ist Anthony Lewis' Verdienst, das geändert zu haben. Lewis war damals Geschäftsführer der Purcell Society und hatte eine Professur für Musik an der University of Birmingham inne. Und so wurde diese Aufnahme einer der Meilensteine bei der Wiederentdeckung und Wiederbelebung »Alter« Musik.
