J. J. Johnson gilt als der erste Musiker, dem es gelang, die Sprache des Bebop auf der Posaune zu artikulieren. Nachdem er 1952 an der ersten Blue-Note-Session von Miles Davis mitgewirkt hatte, aus der das Album "Young Man with a Horn" hervorging, ermöglichte der Produzent Alfred Lion dem Posaunisten, zwischen 1953 und 1955 mit anderen Größen des Bebop eine Reihe von Aufnahmesessions unter eigenem Namen zu machen. Diese erschienen 1956 auf den beiden 12-Zoll-Compilations "The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson, Vol. 1" und "The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson, Vol. 2". Letzere enthält laut AllMusic "einige der besten Bebop-Aufnahmen jener Zeit".
