Posaunist J. J. Johnson griff die Sprache des Bebop mit seinem Instrument auf, womit er die Bewunderung von Dizzy Gillespie und Charlie Parker gewann. Nachdem er bei Miles Davis' erster Blue Note-Session gespielt hatte, leitete Johnson 1953–54 mehrere Sessions, die auf der 12-Inch-LP »The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson, Vol. 1« mit Clifford Brown, Charles Mingus u. a. zusammengefasst wurden.
