Die erste Ausgabe von Fitzgeralds Versübersetzung von »The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyám« war seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts auf der Bildfläche. Bis zum Ende des Jahrhunderts hatte es fünf Auflagen und quasi-Shakespeare-Status erreicht. Die Vierzeiler sind reich an Zitaten – Auszüge nahmen schließlich mehrere Spalten im Oxford Dictionary of Quotations ein.

Das Thema war außerdem kühn antireligiös und dürfte die zunehmend gebildete, skeptische und professionelle Klasse angesprochen haben. Havergal Brian zitiert Ernest Newman zum Thema Bantocks Omar: »… es bringt in die weltliche englische Musik zum ersten Mal die Gedanken und Gefühle von Männern, die im vollen Strom der modernen Kultur und des modernen Humanismus aufgewachsen sind.«

Das Werk ist für drei Solisten, einen großen Chor und ein sehr großes Orchester besetzt. Die Streicher sind in zwei vollständige Streichorchester aufgeteilt, eines auf jeder Seite des Dirigenten, ein Mittel, mit dem Bantock eine Reihe neuer und subtiler Effekte erzielte. Im ersten Jahrzehnt des 20. Jahrhunderts existierte kein anderes säkular-philosophisches Werk dieser Größenordnung.

Omar wurde in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts häufig aufgeführt, doch seit Bantocks Tod im Jahr 1946 waren die Aufführungen von Jahrestagen und externen historischen Ereignissen abhängig.

Diese Studioaufnahme war das Ergebnis einer elfjährigen Planung eines einzelnen BBC-Produzenten, der entschlossen war, eines der erstaunlichsten Chorwerke aller Zeiten zu bewahren. 37 Jahre später ist es immer noch die einzige vollständige Aufnahme des Werks.
