Geburtstag von Charles Ives - von Leonard Bernstein als »erster großer amerikanischer Komponist« gefeiert, der »ganz allein in seiner Scheune in Connecticut seine eigene private musikalische Revolution schuf« - präsentiert Sony Classical die bedeutendste Sammlung von Werken dieses exzentrischen, prophetischen Genies, die jemals veröffentlicht wurde. Die Anniversary Edition ist eine einzigartige und provokative Einführung, die vor 50 Jahren von Columbia Masterworks unter der künstlerischen Leitung von Henrietta Condak zur Feier von Ives' hundertstem Geburtstag auf LP veröffentlicht wurde.
CD 1 beleuchtet »The Many Faces of Charles Ives« anhand von acht verschiedenen Werken, die zwischen 1964 und 1970 aufgenommen wurden: Bernstein dirigiert die New Yorker Philharmoniker in The Fourth of July und The Unanswered Question; General William Booth enters into Heaven, eines von Ives' überragenden Werken, und The Circus Band werden von den Gregg Smith Singers aufgeführt; Bariton Thomas Stewart singt das bewegende Lied In Flanders Fields; Organist E. CD 2, »The Celestial Country«, enthält Ives' frühe gleichnamige Kantate, die er 1897-1899 für seinen konservativen Kompositionslehrer Horatio Parker in Yale komponierte. Gesungen wird sie von den Gregg Smith Singers (begleitet vom Columbia Chamber Orchestra), die auch Arrangements von vier der kraftvollsten patriotischen Lieder von Ives mit dem American Symphony Orchestra unter der Leitung von Leopold Stokowski aufführen.
»The Things our Fathers loved« (CD 3) enthält 25 Lieder von Ives, vorgetragen von der Sopranistin Helen Boatwright, die sich auf amerikanische Lieder spezialisiert hat. Ihr zur Seite steht John Kirkpatrick, der eng mit Ives studierte und arbeitete und noch immer als der maßgebliche Interpret seiner Klaviermusik gilt. Gramophone lobte 1974 diese berühmte Aufnahme als »die beste Auswahl, die je auf LP erschienen ist«, von dem, »was sich als sein wichtigstes, charakteristisches und durchweg inspiriertes Werk herausstellen könnte«.

In seiner Darbietung des langsamen Satzes der Concord»-Sonate, The Alcotts«, schrieb ein Gramophone-Kommentator, Ives' Spiel sei herzlich, aber sachlich, eine Yin-meets-Yang-Qualität, die kluge Darbietungen umarmt». Während dreier kurzer Auszüge aus »Emerson«, dem Eröffnungssatz der Sonate, schreibt der Autor weiter: »Ives gibt den Pianisten eine klangliche Blaupause für den Grundklang, den er sich vorstellte: bangy attack, boozy rhythmic freedom; dies ist nicht die Zeit oder der Ort für bewusst raffiniertes, »hübsches« Spiel.«
Die letzte Scheibe des Sets trägt den Titel »Charles Ives Remembered«. Diese faszinierende Collage aus gesprochenen Erinnerungen ist die erste Dokumentation einer musikalischen Persönlichkeit, die sich der mündlichen Überlieferung bedient. Mehr als 50 Interviews mit Familienangehörigen, Freunden, Nachbarn und Kollegen zeichnen ein lebendiges Erinnerungsporträt dieser schillernden Persönlichkeit, und zwar mit den Stimmen derer, die ihn am besten kannten. Die von der preisgekrönten Musikwissenschaftlerin Vivian Perlis zusammengetragenen Erinnerungen und Reflexionen reichen von Ives' Kindheit und seinen Jahren in Yale über seine öffentliche Karriere als Versicherungsmanager bis hin zu seiner privaten Laufbahn als Komponist und bieten ein facettenreiches und menschliches Bild einer rätselhaften amerikanischen Musikikone.
