Es ist schön, dass Hyperion sich dazu entschlossen hat, diese stimmige Gesamteinspielung wieder aufzulegen: Zwar ist diese „romantische Balladen-Oper“ (1913 / 14) von Ralph Vaughan Williams aus dramaturgischen Gründen nicht unproblematisch, ihre Vernachlässigung auf den Bühnen hat sie jedoch nicht verdient. Ralph Vaughan Williams hat nach seiner jahrelangen Sammeltätigkeit und Herausgabe britischer Volkslieder eine stimmungsvolle, romantisch-musikantische Volksoper im besten Sinne geschrieben, auch wenn das Libretto von Howard Child manchmal recht platt ist und an den Wortwitz von Gilbert und Sullivan nie heranreicht.
Matthew Best legt eine sehr präsentable, allerdings insgesamt etwas zu kontrolliert wirkende Interpretation vor. Dass man diese Musik noch etwas draufgängerischer und saftiger spielen kann, hat Richard Hickox 1997 mit seiner Einspielung gezeigt – freilich nur in Form des von Vaughan Williams später selbst adaptierten Querschnitts, der in Teilen neu konzipierten weltlichen Chorkantate A Cotswold Romance (Chandos 9646). Gleichwohl sollte Hugh the Drover, dieses in musikalischer Hinsicht meisterliche Frühwerk, in dieser insgesamt sehr engagierten und kompetenten Gesamteinspielung in keiner Sammlung mit guten Opernraritäten des 20. Jahrhunderts fehlen.
