Die Oper Amahl and the Night Visitors (Amahl und die nächtlichen Besucher) wurde nach einem Libretto des Komponisten speziell für die Aufführung im amerikanischen Fernsehen geschrieben und wurde von einem geschätzten Fünfmillionen-Publikum begeistert aufgenommen. Die vorliegende Aufnahme entstand kurz nach der Fernsehübertragung und wurde ein absoluter Verkaufsschlager. Die Oper ist in den USA noch immer ein Weihnachts-Klassiker. Menottis Ballett Sebastian, dessen Konzert-Suite hier zu hören ist, spielt im Venedig des 17. Jahrhunderts und wurde von der New York Times hochgelobt.
