One of the very greatest of Texas bluesmen, Lightnin' Hopkins was recorded extensively throughout his adult life.
Born in Centerville, Texas, on March 15, 1912, he recorded for Aladdin, Gold Star and Imperial in the late 1940s and for RPM, Specialty, Sittin' In With, Jax, Herald and TNT in the early 50s. Rediscovered for the white coffee house folk circuit, via the 1959 Folkways recordings of Sam Charters, Lightnin' continued to record prolifically, this time for the One of the greatest of all bluesmen and certainly newer folk renaissance labels such as Tradition and, in particular, Arhoolie. In May 1969, he made "California Mudslide" for the Vault label. The recording took place in Los Angeles and was produced by Bruce Bromberg.
With the exception of Easy On Your Heels (where Lightnin' is accompanied by the bass of John Howard and drums of Bill Brown), Lightnin' sings and plays guitar alone, moving over to the piano for Los Angeles Blues and Antoinette Blues and a whirl on the organ for Jesus Won't You Come By Here and Los Angeles Boogie. The session was made the same month as the once notorious (now with hindsight better appreciated) Poppy albums and shares much of the same effortless, but still hypnotic, easy blues power.
