»The Sorcerer« war die erste Zusammenarbeit von Ws. Gilbert und Sir Arthur Sullivan an einer vollständigen Oper. Sie erlangte nie die immense Popularität ihres unmittelbaren Nachfolgers »H. M. S. Pinafore«, obwohl es sich um eine überaus amüsante Satire handelt (mit einem wesentlich freundlicheren, milderen Humor als in den späteren Werken) über Verhaltensweisen im viktorianischen englischen Landleben – und über die Obsession englischer der englischen Mittelklasse, übernatürliche Phänomene betreffend. Der Bogen schließt sich mit Auszügen aus »Utopia Limited« aus dem Jahr 1893, einer Zeit, in der die extrem erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit von Gilbert & Sullivan allmählich ihr Ende erreichte. Auch diese Operette brachte es auf immerhin 245 Aufführungen.
