Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts war Otakar Ostrčil eine nicht wegzudenkende Größe des Prager Musiklebens. Er war nicht nur ein produktiver und erfolgreicher Komponist, er war von 1920 bis zu seinem Tode 1935 auch Chefdirigent des Prager Nationaltheaters. Erst in jüngster Zeit werden seine Werke wieder häufiger veröffentlicht, so auch seine letzte Oper Jack’s Kingdom nach Leo Tolstoi, die hier in ihrer Ersteinspielung aus den Jahren 1954–1957 vorliegt.
