Nicola Matteis schrieb für das vom Bürgertum geprägte Musikleben Londons eine abwechslungsreiche Musik mit Einflüssen aus Italien, Frankreich und England. Das Ensemble „Theatrum affectuum“ präsentiert die zumeist kurzen Stücke aus Matteis' „Books of Ayres“ als funkelnden, facettenreichen Kosmos: virtuos oder in tim, derb oder elegant, intellektuell oder geerdet... Theatrum affectuum wählte die späteren Versionen der Stücke mit zweiter Oberstimme und führt sie mit Violine und Blockflöte aus, das Continuo besteht aus Cello, Laute und Cembalo bzw. Orgel.
