Modern und reizvoll
Obwohl Semele eine von Händels modernsten und reizvollsten Partituren darstellt, war dem Werk bei seiner Uraufführung 1744 kein Erfolg beschieden: Das Publikum fremdelte nicht nur mit dem seltsamen Zwitterstatus zwischen Oper und Oratorium, sondern auch mit dem weltlichen und zudem ein wenig als anstößig empfundenen Sujet aus der griechischen Mythologie. Erst im 19. Jahrhundert erkannte man den vollen Wert dieses außerordentlichen Werks, das hier mit Leonardo García Alarcón, dem Chœur de Chambre de Namur sowie jungen Solistinnen eine rundum überzeugende Umsetzung erfährt.
