Sir John Barbirolli begann als Orchester-Cellist und spielte unter Elgars Leitung bei der Uraufführung des Cellokonzerts. Von Elgar ermutigt, wandte er sich dem Dirigieren zu und machte sich 1927 mit dem Dirigat von Elgars 2. Symphonie einen Namen. Nach Elgars Tod wurde es Barbirollis Lebensaufgabe, die Musik des Komponisten in der ganzen Welt bekannt zu machen. Die hier vorliegenden Einspielungen beweisen, wie meisterlich er sein Versprechen eingelöst hat.
