»Er war darauf aus, etwas ›Unerhörtes‹ zu schaffen«, hatte Dirigent Nikolaus Harnoncourt im Vorfeld festgestellt. Und er hielt sich daran: Was der Dirigent zum Auftakt seines Mozart/Da-Ponte-Zyklus im Theater an der Wien bot, »hat man so noch nicht gehört« (Kurier). Nikolaus Harnoncourt, »Meister« der historischen Aufführungspraxis, verwirklichte ein Projekt, das schon lange zu seinen Herzenswünschen gehörte: Zum ersten Mal präsentierte er mit seinem »Originalklang-Orchester« Concentus Musicus und seiner persönlichen Sängerauswahl den kompletten Mozart/Da Ponte-Zyklus und erntete die Früchte seiner Mozart-Forschung – ein »enthusiastisch bejubelter Zyklus!« (news.at). In einer intensiven Proben- und Vorbereitungsphase war er auf der Suche nach einer auf historischen Quellen beruhenden und doch in unserer Zeit verankerten Mozart-Hermeneutik, um die gesamte Da Ponte-»Trilogie« – Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni und Così fan tutte – in nur sechs Wochen zu inszenieren. »Der Höhepunkt von Harnoncourts Beschäftigung mit [Mozarts Da-Ponte-Opern] – ein Mozart, der aus historischen Quellen schöpft und doch in unserer Zeit verankert ist« (Die Presse).
