Die 1931 in Edinburgh uraufgeführte sinfonische Kantate für Sopran, Bariton, Chor und großes Orchester basiert auf einem philosophischen Werk von Henry Bennet Brewster, das von den Schriften eines Gefangenen in Einzelhaft handelt, seinen Reflexionen über das Leben und die Vorbereitung auf den Tod.
Die überaus gelungene Surround-Aufnahme bei CHANDOS lässt nicht die geringsten Zweifel am Rang dieses nach wie vor vernachlässigten Werks aufkommen.
