Written on Skin ist die zweite Kooperation von George Benjamin und Martin Crimp. Ihre erste Zusammenarbeit, die einaktige Oper Into The Little Hill wurde mit viel Anerkennung bedacht. Written on Skin wurde vom Festival in Aix-en-Provence und dem Royal Opera House in Auftrag gegeben; diese Aufnahme wurde bei der Premiere in Aix-enProvence im Juli 2012 aufgenommen und von George Benjamin selbst dirigiert. Sein Status als einer der führenden Komponisten Großbritanniens hat der modernen Oper eine nie da gewesene Popularität beschert.
