Lang und alles andere als geradlinig war Dvoraks Weg mit dem Cello bis zu seinem berühmten Cellokonzert. Zwar schätzte er das Instrument wegen seiner Klangfarbe, die er in seinen Orchesterwerken gerne effektvoll einsetzte, aber lange Zeit zweifelte er doch daran, ob dies ein geeignetes Soloinstrument wäre. Und so tastete er sich mit Eigenkompositionen und Bearbeitungen wie den „Stillen Wäldern“, eigentlich für zwei Klaviere schrieben, immer weiter vor, arrangierte auch Vokalmusik wie die anrührende Liebeserklärung Rusalkas „Lied an den Mond“ für das ihn so faszinierende Cello um.
