The Specials sind eine der prägenden Bands der späten 70er/frühen 80er Jahre, zusammen mit Jerry Dammers kultigem Label Two Tone Records. Ursprünglich 1977 als The Coventry Automatics gegründet, kombinierten The Specials jamaikanischen Ska und Rocksteady mit der Energie des Punk und lösten damit ein ganzes Ska-Revival aus und halfen den gleichgesinnten Bands Madness, The Beat und The Selecter, ihre ersten Singles zu veröffentlichen.
Ihr Debütalbum "Specials" erschien im Oktober 1979 und gilt bis heute als eines der klassischen Debütalben. Als sie im Oktober 1980 ihr zweites Album "More Specials" herausbrachten, hatte die Band mit ihrer Live-Single "Too Much Too Young" bereits Platz eins der britischen Charts erreicht und eine ausverkaufte Tournee durch das Vereinigte Königreich sowie Reisen nach Europa, Nordamerika, Japan und Australien hinter sich.
