Als junger Sänger / Songwriter / Instrumentalist kam er zunächst in einer Band namens Love and Money zu internationaler Aufmerksamkeit. Mit nur 18 Jahren unterschrieb er bei Phonogramm. James schrieb vier klassische Alben für die Band, darunter das erstaunlich reife »Strange Art of Love« Album.
Er arbeitete mit Produzenten wie Gary Katz von Steely Dan und Tom Dowd (der Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton und Aretha Franklin produzierte). Die Alben produzierten mehrere Hit-Singles, Preise und schufen eine weltweite Fanbase. Er spielte mit Künstlern wie U2, Nanci Griffiths, Tina Turner und BB King und trat in Fernsehfilmen wie Top of the Pops, The Tube, The Transatlantic Sessions und sogar Wogan auf. Er lebt weiter in Glasgow, unterstützt Celtic, schreibt und performt.
