Die dritte Studioveröffentlichung der Gruppe, "Buhloone Mindstate", erschien am 21. September 1993. Mit diesem Album entwickelte die Gruppe einen neuen Sound, während sie stilistisch und musikalisch weiter wuchsen.
Es gab mehrere Momente auf dem Album, die zeigten, dass die Band gereift war.
"I Be Blowin'" war eine Abwechslung, denn das Stück war ein Instrumentalstück mit dem Saxophonspiel von Maceo Parker. Das introspektive "I Am I Be" zeigte De La Soul in ihrer bisher größten Selbstreferenz. "Long Island Wildin'" war eine Zusammenarbeit mit den japanischen Hip-Hop-Künstlern Kan Takagi (Major Force) und dem Trio Scha Dara Parr (SDP). Die erste Single des Albums, "Breakadawn", verwendete ein Sample von Michael Jackson's "I Can't Help It" und Smokey Robinson's "Quiet Storm".
De La Soul arbeitete bei "Patti Dooke" zum ersten Mal mit Guru von Gang Starr zusammen, und dem weibliche MC Shortie No Mas, die auf vielen Tracks des Albums zu hören war, besonders bei "In The Woods". Das Album endete mit einer Old School Biz Markie Kollaboration namens "Stone Age".
Das Album war ein großer Erfolg bei den Kritikern und Rolling Stone listete es als eines der besten Hip-Hop-Alben aller Zeiten.
