By the time he made ‘Curtis’, his debut solo album from 1970, Curtis Mayfield had already achieved far more than many musicians do in a lifetime.
He had racked up a string of hits as leader of The Impressions, for whom he was the principal songwriter, had produced successful recordings for other artists and was owner of his own record label.
