Emerson schrieb Country-Hits, nahm Hillbilly, Rockabilly und sogar eine R&B-Single auf! 1978 wurde er von Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler ('The Ballad Of The Green Berets') erschossen! Mit seltenen Demos und Aufnahmen aus dem Besitz von Lee Emersons Nachlassverwaltern!
Lee Emerson ließ die ländliche Armut in Virginia für ein Leben im Westen hinter sich. 1953 nahm er in Cody, Wyoming, seine erste Single für Wagon Wheel Records auf. Freunde empfahlen ihm, nach Nashville überzusiedeln, was er befolgte. Kaum dort angekommen, erhielt er einen Vertrag von Columbia Records, und der größte Star des Labels, Marty Robbins, wurde auf ihn aufmerksam. Sie absolvierten zwei Duettsessions, zwei von nur ganz wenigen in Robbins' Karriere. Emersons Columbia-Aufnahmen enthalten seine Originalversion des Bluegrass-Klassikers 'I Thought I Heard You Calling My Name'. Er bewegte sich musikalisch zwischen Hillbilly, Rockabilly und Rock 'n' Roll. Enthalten sind auch zwei bislang unveröffentlichte Columbia-Einspielungen. 1961 nahm Emerson unter dem Namen Heywood Jenkins eine R&B-Single für Mercury auf - neue Titel gab es von ihm erst wieder 1976. Zwischenzeitlich komponierte er einen von Marty Robbins' größten Hits, 'Ruby Ann'.
Etwa 1978 war Emerson alkohol- und tablettenabhängig. Er schrieb in Texas Songs mit Freddy Fender, dann kehrte er nach Nashville zurück, wo er eine Sängerin kennenlernte und mit ihr auch arbeitete. Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler ('The Ballad Of The Green Berets') war ebenfalls mit der Frau liiert - und am 2. Dezember 1978 wurde Emerson von Sadler erschossen.
Mit dieser CD ist die Emerson-Story erzählt. Wir erfahren von den tragischen Lebensumständen und erhalten seine kompletten Aufnahmen - viele davon jetzt erstmals auf CD! Lee Emerson left rural poverty in Virginia for a new life out west. In Cody, Wyoming in 1953 he recorded his first single for Wagon Wheel Records. Friends told him he should go to Nashville, so he did. Right after arriving, he landed a contract with Columbia and caught the attention of the label's biggest star, Marty Robbins. They taped two duet sessions together - the very few Robbins ever did! Emerson's Columbia issues also included his original version of what is now a bluegrass classic, 'I Thought I Heard You Calling My Name'. Emerson shuttled between hillbilly, rockabilly, and rock 'n' roll. Two unissued Columbia masters are included. In 1961, Emerson recorded an R&B single as Heywood Jenkins for Mercury, but didn't record again until 1976. In between, he wrote one of Marty Robbins' biggest hits, Ruby Ann.
By 1978, Emerson had become a drunk and a pill-head. He was writing songs in Texas with Freddy Fender but returned to Nashville to work with...and date... a female singer. Staff Sgt. Barry Sadler ('The Ballad Of The Green Berets') also dated the woman and on December 2, 1978 Sadler shot and killed Emerson.
