Die Aufnahmekarriere von Kris Kristofferson begann relativ spät, als er bereits Mitte 30 war und 1970 „Kristofferson“ veröffentlichte. Der Star aus Nashville unterschied sich von anderen Country Acts und schrieb politische Texte, die weit über den Standard von Nashville herausreichten.
Songs von „Kristofferson“ wurden von Zeitgenossen wie Johnny Cash („Sunday Mornin‘ Comin‘ Down“) und Janis Joplin („Me And Bobby McGee“) gespielt, die seinen Status als Songwriters sofort verstanden.
