Zweifelsohne ist John Lee Hooker (1917 - 2001) einer der größten Bluesmusiker. Hookers Karriere nahm 1949 mit der Veröffentlichung von »Boogie Chillen« richtig Fahrt auf.

Die Single stieß bis auf Platz 1 der Rhythm-&-Blues-Hitparade vor und verkaufte sich eine Million Mal. Zwei Jahre später landete er mit »I'm In The Mood« den nächsten Millionenseller. Mit seiner Mischung aus Gesang und Sprache und den ansteckenden Beats traf er den Nerv der afroamerikanischen Plattenkäufer. Hinzu kam seine elektrisch verstärkte Gitarre, mit der er einen neuartigen und richtungsweisenden Sound schuf. Hooker spielte in dieser Zeit meistens solo.

Ab und zu wurde er von Musikern wie Eddie Burns, Boogie Woogie Red oder Eddie Kirkland begleitet. In den Jahren darauf wuchs durch zahlreiche Plattenaufnahmen und Tourneen seine Popularität. Allerdings nicht linear. Nach einem Karriereknick Anfang der 1950er rückten Hooker und der ursprüngliche Country Blues Ende des Jahrzehnts bei jungen weißen Studenten und Intellektuellen in den Blickpunkt. Anfang der 1960er gewann Hooker auch in der Popwelt immer mehr an Beachtung. Im Zuge des Rhythm-&-Blues-Booms in England schaffte er sogar den Sprung in die Pop-Charts. 1980 wurde er in die Blues Hall Of Fame aufgenommen, 2009 erfuhr auch sein Hit »Boom Boom« diese Ehrung.
