ldris Muhammad's drum-led albums for Prestige in the early 70s are a fine synthesis of the disparate elements that went into the era's R&B/Soul / Jazz experimentation and an indication of the many changes that were to occur in Black Music generally over the immediate years following the end of the 1960s.
Black Rhythm Revolution and Peace And Rhythm feature the same core of musicians - ldris on the drums, Virgil Jones on trumpet. Clarence Thomas on saxes, Melvin Sparks on guitar, Jimmy Lewis on fender bass and Buddy Caldwell on conga. Harold Mabern takes care of the piano chores on the first album, Kenny Barron on the second, Peace And Rhythm also has Ron Carter on bass, Willie Bivins on vibes, Alan Fontaine on guitar, Angel Allende on percussion and Sakinah Muhammad on vocals. Reedman Thomas (a native of New Orleans as is ldris) arranged the material which includes the Watts 103rd St Band hit Express Yourself, Joe Duke's Soulful Drums (show-cased originally on Jack McDuff's Screamin'), James Brown's Super Bad, the modern jazz grooves of Wander and By The Red Sea (the latter with New Guinea Log Drum solo), pop jazz - The Monkees' I'm A Believer, Don't Knock My Love, Brother You Know, Peace and Rhythm.
A fine, fine, funky 2-on-l CD collection.
