In den 70er Jahren buchte ich verschiedene amerikanische Künstler in die deutschen Folk Clubs. Jetzt zum 35-jährigem Bestehen von Bear Family, werde ich sentimental und blicke gern auf diese Zeit zurück. -- Die Künstler waren u. a. Bill Clifton, Hedy West, Bonnie Dobson, The Strange Creek Singers, Tracy & Eloise Schwarz, Bill Monroe, Ed McCurdy. -- Im Laufe der Jahre hat Bear Family diverse Eigenproduktionen von Hedy, Bill, Tracy & Eloise Schwarz veröffentlicht. Hedy produzierte für Bear Family eine LP von Ed McCurdy, die zum ersten Mal seine Komposition Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream von ihm selbst gesungen enthielt. In den Jahren vorher wurde dieses Antikriegslied von vielen anderen Künstlern interpretiert, darunter Pete Seeger und Johnny Cash. Es wurde sogar 1989 beim Fall der Mauer gesungen. Ed, der die Szene am Fernseher in Kanada beobachtete, rief mich an und war ganz begeistert. -- Neben den deutschen Konzerten des Bill Monroe (4-CD/1 DVD Box), haben wir die kompletten Studioaufnahmen von Bill Monroe auf diversen CD Boxen veröffentlicht - darunter eine faszinierende Sternstunde der Country Music, wieWalter Fuchs es ausdrückt. - Jetzt ist es noch einmal mitzuerleben, jenes denkwürdige Zusammentreffen zweier Legenden: HedyWest und Bill Clifton, Hedy West, die 2005 starb und Bill Clifton, der 2008 in Nashville in die Bluegrass Hall Of Fame aufgenommen wurde, hatten sich 1972 in einem Studio in London getroffen, um ein gemeinsames Album zu produzieren. Diese Aufnahmen veröffentlichte Richard Weize zuerst bei Folk Variety und dann kurz danach auf Bear Family. -- Die LP sorgte damals für viel Aufsehen in der Szene. Ja, man sprach sogar von einer ungewöhnlichen Sternstunde der Country Music. Schließlich kamen beide Künstler aus grundverschiedenen Gesellschaftsschichten und unterschiedlichen Musikszenen, Bill Clifton aus der Oberschicht, HedyWest eher aus der Arbeiterklasse. Beide hatten sie eine akademische Ausbildung genossen, und beide engagierten sich für die Folklore der Unterprivilegierten. Hedy West, Komponistin, Sängerin, Banjo- und Gitarrenvirtuosin bewegte sich im Bereich des amerikanischen Folksongs und Bill Clifton, Komponist, Sänger und Gitarren- und Autoharpvirtuose, leitete viele Jahre lang mit großem Erfolg eine Bluegrass Band, die Dixie Mountain Boys. Er organisierte auch das erste Bluegrass Festival. -- Aus heutiger Sicht würde man die Musik der beiden unter der Bezeichnung 'Singer / Songwriter' oder unter 'Americana' zusammenfassen. -- Dieses legendäre Album von 1974, das zwei Jahre vorher durch einen glücklichen Zufall eingespielt wurde, ist jetzt mit dem Original- Layout auf CD wieder veröffentlicht. Die Stimmen und die Instrumente der beiden Akteure vermischen sich voller Charme zu einem zeitlosen Kunstwerk. Die Songs sind meist Traditionals wie 'Whitehouse Blues', 'Curley Headed Baby', und 'Pictures From Life's Other Side'. Beim Titel 'Angel Band' werden beide von Bill Cliftons Familie begleitet. Diese Musik zwingt zum Zuhören, sie ist einfach 'cool', das Album ist ein Muss!

Now, on the occasion of Bear Family's 35th anniversary, I'm getting sentimental and would like to look back on that era. -- Among others, the artists included Bill Clifton, Hedy West, Bonnie Dobson, The Strange Creek Singers, Tracy & Eloise Schwarz, Bill Monroe, and Ed McCurdy. -- Over the years Bear Family has released several productions by Hedy, Bill, Tracy & Eloise Schwarz. Hedy produced an album by Ed McCurdy for Bear Family, which included his composition Last Night I Had The Strangest Deam, sung by himself for the first time. For years, this anti-war-song had been covered by many other artists, including Pete Seeger and Johnny Cash - it was even sung in 1989 at the fall of the Berlin Wall. Ed, who was watching the scene on TV in Canada, rang me and was totally enthusiastic. -- Apart from Bill Monroe's German concerts (4-CD / 1-DVD Box-Set), we have published his complete studio recordings on a series of CD box-sets. Among these was a fascinating great moment in country music - as expressed by Walter Fuchs: This memorable meeting of two legends - HedyWest and Bill Clifton - is now revived again: HedyWest, who died in 2005, and Bill Clifton, who was inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame in Nashville, had met in a London studio in 1972 to produce an album together. These recordings were first issued by Richard Weize on Folk Variety and soon afterwards on Bear Family. -- The album caused quite a stir on the scene. It was even referred to as an exceptional great moment in country music. After all, both artists came from completely different social backgrounds and different music scenes. Bill Clifton was upper class, HedyWest was more working class. Both of them had been to university, and they were both involved in folk music of the underprivileged. Hedy West, composer, singer, brilliant banjo and guitar player, was an expert in American folk songs, whereas Bill Clifton, composer, singer and virtuoso on the guitar and autoharp, was for many years the successful leader of a bluegrass band, the Dixie Mountain Boys. He also organized the first Bluegrass Festival. -- Today the music of both artists would be categorized as 'singer / songwriter' or 'Americana'. -- This legendary album from 1974, which was recorded two years earlier by a lucky coincidence, has now been reissued on CD with the original sleeve art. The voices and instruments of the two artists blend into a charming, timeless work of art. The songs are mostly traditionals such as 'Whitehouse Blues', 'Curley Headed Baby', and 'Pictures From Life's Other Side'. The Song 'Angel Band' is accompanied by Clifton's family. This music makes you listen; it's simply 'cool', and the album is an absolute must-have!
