Gov't Mule sind eine Southern Rock Band, die 1994 als ein Nebenprojekt der Allman Brothers Band von Warren Haynes und Allen Woody gegründet wurde. Dieses Album ist ihr selbstbetiteltes Debüt, das ursprünglich 1995 erschien. Die Atmosphäre des Albums gleicht der einer unbeschwerten Jam-Session.
Tatsächlich wurde das Album live im Studio aufgenommen; viele der Tracks gehen ineinander über. »Mule« wird live noch immer gefeiert und »Rocking Horse« wurde später von der Allman Brothers Band aufgenommen, als Warren Haynes für das Album »Hittin' The Note« in den Schoß der Band zurückkehrte.
