Die Neuproduktion des Westküstenbluesers wurde schon im Jahr 2009 in den Pacifica Studios in Kalifornien eingespielt und blieb bis vor kurzem ohne Veröffentlichung. Warum? Vielleicht ist die Zeit in der ein Bluesmusiker einfach nur den Blues spielen konnte und dabei virtuos mit der Gitarre umgeht und clevere Texte schreibt vorbei. Keines der großen Label hatte Interesse an der fertigen Produktion und schließlich sprang Reference Recordings mit dem Sublabel FRESH in die Bresche und "Prof." Keith O. Johnson übernahm gleich noch das finale Mastering.

Das Album besteht mit seinen elf Stücken aus der Feder MacLeods und dieser lebt seine Blues-Historie und die langjährige Erfahrung als Sideman bei den großen der Branche aus. Man hat nie das Gefühl, als müsste ein Song jetzt in ein bestimmtes Format gedrückt werden, sondern viel mehr, dass der Titel so und nicht anders erwachsen ist. Ob es beim Titelstück Brand New Eyes darum geht die Welt mit neuen Augen zu sehen oder bei Something Dark is Walking um die Dämonen in uns und um uns herum, immer ist das unterliegende Thema Selbstheilung und der Blick nach vorn.
