For most of her fans, Buffy Sainte-Marie wrote and sang her finest songs for Vanguard in the mid-60s, though she has since enjoyed long and prosperous career - with cross-over efforts to country, rock, soundtrack themes, and presenting on children's TV (Sesame Street), acting and activism. With her unusual vibrato voice, she achieved cult status singing Appalachian and Chilean folk, and was widely noted for articulating Native American viewpoints in her repertoire.
Much of her Vanguard material gained commercial inroads through their cover versions: Universal Soldier was one of Donovan's first hits-.-Until It's Time for You to Go was covered by several pop artists and became a British hit for Elvis Presley in the early 70s-.-and Cod'ine, one of the few 60s songs to explicitly address the dangers of drugs, was covered by Californian rock bands Quicksilver Messenger Service and the Charlatans.
Native North American Child - An Odyssey, Buffy's 1974 recording is now available as a release. It contains her biggest UK hit Soldier Blue, which reached a #7 position in the UK charts in 1971.
