In der Wüste von Nevada, 1955: Brian und Peggy Bell arbeiten als Testpersonen für das Unternehmen »Samson«, einem Projekt zur Erprobung von Impfstoffen gegen radioaktive Strahlen.
Schon bald erwartet 'Amerikas erste Nuklear-Familie', wie die beiden von den Atomwissenschaftlern genannt werden, Nachwuchs: Sam wird geboren. Noch in derselben Nacht kommen seine Eltern durch spontane Selbstentzündung qualvoll ums Leben. Doch damit ist das Experiment noch nicht beendet, denn Sam wächst zu einem Mann heran, dessen unbändige Wut andere Menschen plötzlich in Flammen aufgehen lassen kann.
