Fitzgerald wurde manchmal als »Libretto«-Sängerin angesehen, die mehr an Swing und Harmonie interessiert war als für das emotionale Gewicht eines Liedes. Das wurde im Allgemeinen Sängerinnen wie Billie Holiday oder Carmen McRae und Betty Carter überlassen.

Aber mit Porter hatte sie es mit einem Künstler zu tun, dessen rhythmische Raffinesse der ihren gleichkam, und diese Lieder, in denen Reim und Vernunft, Musik und Bedeutung ziemlich genau dasselbe waren. Es hat fehlgeleitete Versuche gegeben, die Lieder des Broadway und der Tin Pan Alley als »Amerikas klassische Musik« zu bezeichnen, was am Thema vorbeigeht.

Aber wenn das Wort überhaupt etwas bedeutet, dann sind diese Aufführungen Klassiker und gehören zu den ersten großen Werke der Ära der Langspielplatte. Mit neuen Anmerkungen von Brian Morton und dem renommierten Pariser Jazz Magazine.
