Wenn Charles Mingus eine Band mit dem Kontrabass anführte, wirkte er in mehrfacher Hinsicht gigantisch - und war es auch. Er hatte einen enormen kreativen Appetit (und war außerdem sehr temperamentvoll) und schuf seine eigene Kombination aus Hard Bop, Blues und Avantgarde-Jazz. Niemand war zwischen den 1950er und 1970er Jahren so vielseitig wie Mingus, und von seinen zahlreichen Alben gilt »Mingus Ah Um« (1959) als Jazzklassiker.
