Geboren in Wien als Walter Aptowitzer musste Walter Arlen (1920-2023) vor den Nazis in die USA fliehen, wo er 1945 mit eingereichten Liedern einen Studienaufenthalt bei Roy Harris gewann und fortan als Schüler und Amanuensis bei ihm lebte. Eine Netflix-Dokumentation richtete 2020 wieder die Aufmerksamkeit auf den Komponisten, von dem hier zwei entdeckenswerte Vokalkompositionen zu hören sind.
