The Beggar's Opera

The Beggar’s Opera wurde 1728 von John Gay geschrieben und gilt als die erste musikalische Komödie, die etwa 300 Jahre vor der heutigen Mode der »Jukebox«-Produktionen spielt, die eine Handlung um einen Hit herum entwickeln. Gay nahm einige der bekanntesten Melodien seiner Zeit, sowohl klassische als auch populäre, und verarbeitete sie zu einer bissig-satirischen Geschichte, die unter Londons Dieben, Zuhältern und Prostituierten spielt.
The Beggar’s Opera war von der ersten Aufführung an sehr populär und ist seither die Grundlage für zahlreiche Bühnen-, Musical- und Filmadaptionen. Sie erkundet eine zynische Welt, in der kapitalistische Gier, Kriminalität und soziale Ungleichheit die Norm sind. Robert Carsens Neuinterpretation dieses Klassikers ist in der Tat »eine brillante Tour de Force zwischen Barock und Moderne« (Libération).
