Ernest John Moeran wurde in London geboren, wuchs aber in Norfolk auf und hatte starke Bindungen zu Irland. Noch als Student am Royal College of Music wurde er von einer Aufführung von Vaughan Williams' Norfolk Rhapsody inspiriert, die »den Geist der englischen Landschaft zu atmen« schien, und begann bald, Volkslieder für sich selbst zu sammeln.
Moerans Transkriptionen stammen von englischen und irischen traditionellen Sängern mit ländlichem und seefahrerischem Hintergrund und retteten Musik und Worte, die sowohl unterhaltsam erdig als auch erhaben schön waren und sonst mit den Künstlern, die sie aufführten, untergegangen wären.
