Mit Birmingham ist Mendelssohn durch Aufenthalte in den 1830er und 1840er Jahren, besonders aber durch die Uraufführung seines Oratoriums ›Elias‹ verbunden, so dass man zu Recht von einer Mendelssohn-Stadt sprechen kann. In der historischen Town Hall fanden denn auch die Aufnahmen zur Gesamteinspielung der Sinfonien Mendelssohns mit dem City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra unter Edward Gardner statt.
