Es ist auffällig, dass George Lloyd vermied, auf große Orchester zu setzen, als er beschloss, konzertante Werke für Violine zu schreiben. Das Soloinstrument sollte nicht von orchestraler Wucht überdeckt werden. Er begründete es: "I don't really like the relationship between the violin and the big modern orchestra... I hate to hear that poor little fiddle being totally swamped".
Sein Cellokonzert vollendete Loyd im Juli 1997, ein Jahr vor seinem Tod im Alter von 85 Jahren, und in diesem herbstlichen Stück lässt sich eine wehmütige, abschiedsvolle Qualität erkennen, in der Gefühle der Trauer und des Bedauerns wiederholt auftauchen. (Paul Conway)
