Leopold Stokowski (1882-1977) gehörte zu den herausragenden Dirigenten seiner Zeit und zeichnete sich u. a. durch seine Fähigkeit aus, einen besonders üppigen und prächtigen Klang zu erzeugen. In den Jahren 1958-1972 entstanden eine ganze Reihe von Aufnahmen für die amerikanischen Labels Everest und Vanguard, die seinen reifen Stil dokumentieren und hier erstmals auf ALTO zusammengefasst wurden.
