Stefano Landi war ein einflussreicher früher Opernkomponist, und La morte d’Orfeo gilt als Meilenstein in der Entwicklung des Genres. Die Erzählung beginnt dort, wo Monteverdis L’Orfeo endet und führt uns durch die restlichen Abenteuer von Orpheus in der Unterwelt. Orpheus wird totgeschlagen und von den furchterregenden Mänaden auseinandergerissen. Er überlebt als wandernde Seele und wird schließlich als Stern am Himmel wiedergeboren. Landi gelang es, die griechische Tragödie in ein zeitloses Musikdrama zu verwandeln, den Ausgangspunkt aller Opern, und Seen and Heard International erklärte, dass sie in Pierre Audis Amsterdamer Produktion »noch nie zuvor auf eine solche technische Perfektion gestoßen« sei.
