L’occasione fa il ladro (»Die Gelegenheit macht den Dieb«) wurde von dem jungen Rossini in nur elf Tagen komponiert, in Zusammenarbeit mit seinem Librettisten Luigi Prividali. Die Erzählung ist eine Komödie mit zahlreichen Verwechslungen in einem Akt. Graf Alberto, der auf dem Weg ist, eine ihm noch unbekannte Verlobte zu heiraten, verlässt ein Gasthaus mit dem falschen Koffer. Don Parmenione, der die Papiere und Besitztümer des Grafen bei sich hat, gibt sich dreist als Alberto aus, um die Braut für sich zu gewinnen. Jochen Schönlebers gefeierte Inszenierung adaptiert Rossinis rasantes und geschickt gezeichnetes Moraldrama, um Rossinis überschwänglicher Ensemble-Burletta eine heutige Relevanz zu verleihen.
