Jean Barrière (1707-1747) war der angesehenste französische Cellist seiner Zeit. Erst sein virtuoses Spiel brachte gegenüber der Viola da gamba den Durchbruch für das bis dahin geradezu verpönte Violoncello. Einige der eingespielten Werke, die für Diskantgambe komponiert wurden, zeigen, dass selbst ein Barrière nicht um die Gambe herumkam.
