Inspiriert von Gustav Mahler und Richard Strauss schuf der italienische Komponist Alfredo Casella 1908 / 09 in Paris seine vielschichtige zweite Sinfonie, ein Höhepunkt seines frühen Schaffens. Mit diesem Geniestreich verschaffte Casella der italienischen Sinfonik international neue Geltung. Erst mit 45 Jahren widmete sich Casella auch dem Musiktheater und komponierte die Oper La Donna Serpente nach einem Stück von Carlo Gozzi.
