Schon seit frühester Jungend tauchte William Vincent Wallace in die traditionelle Irische und Schottische Volksmusik ein. 1848, fünf Jahre nach seinem sensationellen Erfolg als Klaviervirtuose in New York, brachte er seine erste Folge von Arrangements heraus, weitere folgten bis zu seinem Tode. Diese wundervollen und genialen Werke, die er für den aufblühenden heimischen Musikmarkt schrieb, zeichnen sich durch den bewussten Verzicht von Sentimentalität aus. Stattdessen konzentriert sich Wallace auf Wärme, Witz einen Hauch von eigenen Zitaten und strahlenden Glanz. Rosemary Tuck und Richard Bonynge sind die weltweit führenden Wallace-Interpreten.
