Kara Karayev played a leading role in Azerbaijani musical life after the Second World War. Born in Baku in 1918, the composer first studied piano at the Music Technical School of Baku before he began composing during his studies at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory and later became a student of Dmitri Shostakovich. His ability to literally reconcile seemingly irreconcilable musical styles such as the chromaticism of a Prokofiev with the folk music of his homeland, his talent for the fantastic, lyrical and psychological, are probably best expressed in his musical dramas and ballets. Karayev has combined the ballets Seven Beauties and In The Path of Thunder into two suites, which can be heard on the present CD.
