Jesús Guridi is regarded not only as one of the twentieth century's foremost exponents of Basque nationalism in music but as one of Spain's greatest operatic and orchestral composers, achieving international renown with the Diez melodías vascas (Naxos 8.557110), the Homenaje a Walt Disney and the Sinfonía pirenaica. Drawing inspiration from native folk-music, the Pyrenean Symphony is a musical evocation of the soul of the mountains and the dangers they represent. The work abounds in descriptive effects, from the light and silence of the peaks to the storms that at times rage around them.
