Fantasias for the Viols (1680)

Die Fantasie für Gambenensemble ist ein Höhepunkt der englischen Musik. Zwischen dem Beginn des 16. und dem Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts entstanden Hunderte dieser »Fancies«, die größten Meister der Zeit wie Byrd, Gibbons, Lawes, Locke hinterließen bewundernswerte Kompositionen dieses Genres. Der junge Purcell schrieb diese vollendeten Werke, vergleichbar mit Bachs Musikalischem Opfer und der Kunst der Fuge, in der Gewißheit, daß sich kein Zeitgenosse mehr für sie interessieren würde.
