Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst (1812-65) war einer der führenden Musiker seiner Zeit, ein Freund von Berlioz, Chopin, Liszt und Mendelssohn und für Joseph Joachim »der größte Geiger, den ich je gehört habe«. Doch die beliebten Zugabestücke, mit denen Ernst heute in Erinnerung bleibt, stellen nur einen Bruchteil seines Schaffens dar.
