Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst (1812-65) war einer der führenden Musiker seiner Zeit, ein Freund von Berlioz, Chopin, Liszt und Mendelssohn und für Joseph Joachim »der größte Geiger, den ich je gehört habe«. Doch die beliebten Zugabestücke, mit denen Ernst heute in Erinnerung bleibt, stellen nur einen Bruchteil seines Schaffens dar.
Diese zweite CD – in einer Reihe von sechs CDs, die zum ersten Mal sein gesamtes Violinwerk vorstellt – vereint brillante Darstellung und ausdrucksstarke Melodie: Die Otello-Fantasie und die Rossini-Variationen zeigen, wie Ernst Paganinis Erbe entwickelt, und der Boléro, die beiden Romanzen und die Pensées-Flüchtlinge zeigen, warum er war in den Pariser Salons so beliebt.
