Berlioz war vor allem für seine umfassenden Chorwerke bekannt. Allerdings war er auch einer der ersten Komponisten französischer Melodien überhaupt. Diese zwischen 1829 und 1850 komponierten »Mélodies« sind fein gearbeitete Miniaturen, in denen wir sein Streben nach einer persönlichen Sprache und seinen Wunsch nach Neuem erkennen.
